Framed Print of A large army exercise, referred to officially as Operation Crocodile
A large army exercise, referred to officially as Operation Crocodile took place recently in Palestine and Trans-Jordan, in the regions which were the scene of many famous exploits achieved by the Australians during the 1914- 18 war.
Exercise Crocodile, directed by Lt.Gen. W.G. Holmes, CB, DSO, GOC 9th. Army, went as follows: Palestine was in enemy hands, the Allies landed at two points along the coast, Gaza and Haifa,
and pushed the enemy back to the Jordan valley, where they made a stand before they were forced to retire into the Trans-Jordan hills.
During their retreat the enemy demolished the Allenby Bridge, leaving a 250 ft gap; thus making the Allies main task the job of bridging the Jordan.
Both Bailey and pontoon bridges were constructed, and in addition vehicle rafts wore used to ferry non and equipment across in the early stages. A Shaman tank crossed the Jordan for the first time. Several thousand men took part, including an Indian formation, British regiments and contingents from the Arab Legion, Yugoslav and Greek forces.
Gen. Sir Bernard Paget, KCB, DSO, MC, Commander In Chief of Middle East Forces, was present for
three days;.
