British & Allied Troops, Western Desert campaign, the Desert War
British & Allied Troops, Western Desert campaign, the Desert War.
Immediately after they had overwhelmed the Mareth Line, the Eighth Army pressed on to Gabes and the
town was occupied on 29th March.
New Zealanders and men of the Black Watch were the first to go in.
Picture shows: Just as they were about to escape from Gabes, this truck full of Italian soldiers was
intercepted in the town.
Almost at the same time the last of the enemy were hurriedly leaving.
In the background can be sen the explosion as enemy Sappers blow up the bridge which leads out of the
town.
