British and Allied Troops, Western Desert campaign, the Desert War.
Four New Zealanders formed part of a motorised infantry unit detailed to form a road block outside Benghazi, Libya. They could not use their transport to withdraw, as the road was cut behind
them, so they decided to walk, not knowing where the Allied line was.
They had little food, but with the help of some Arabic, they obtained help from some friendly local people.
Walking day and nightt they
were at last seen by South African troops 20 miles west of Gazala and brought into the Brigade Headquarters after covering about 250 miles on foot in in 11 days.
