British and Allied Troops, Western Desert campaign, the Desert War, February to May 1943.
The turning of the Mareth Defences and the destruction
of a large part of the Afrika Korps was carried out
by a rapid and perfectly organised outflanking movement which will make military history.
When General Montgomery saw that the bridgehead at Mareth could not be held without considerable loss of life and equipment, he switched the main attack west to El Hamma, driving Rommels right (southern) flank.
Rommel was completely outfought and outgeneralled. The 8th Army advanced through El Hamma and entered Gabes among cheering crowds of townspeople.
