An American Pacific Fleet cruiser pours steams of water into the stricken light aircraft carrier USS Princeton, hit by
Japanese bombs during the Second Battle of the Philippine Sea.
The planes on the Princetons forward flight deck had been in action earlier in the day, and the pilots, who had shot down 37 enemy aircraft when several hundred attacked the carrier group, where in the ready-room awaiting further action when the
carrier was hit.
The stricken vessel later sank, but most of the personnel was saved by the cruiser.
Five other US warships were lost in the six-day air and sea battle of 22-27 October 1944, in which three Japanese task forces were defeated, 24 enemy warships were sunk and at least 34 more were seriously damaged.

Prints are glazed with lightweight, shatterproof, optical clarity acrylic (providing the same general protection from the environment as glass). The back is stapled hardboard with a sawtooth hanger attached. Note: measurements provided are estimated outer dimensions, which include both the image and the frame. While we aim to keep sizing consistent, exact dimensions may vary slightly due to differences in print size or production requirements, which may result in a variation in the overall size (up to approximately 2.5cm (1"))
