On December 26th 1943, one of Germanys few great warships, the 26000 ton Scharnhorst was sunk by units of the Home Fleet. The Scharnhorst was attempting to intercept a Russia bound convoy when she was driven off, chased and finally destroyed off the North Cape. Slowed down by torpedoes from
Royal Navy destroyers and crippled by the gunfire of HMS Duke of York, she was sent to the bottom by torpedoes fired from HMS Jamaica.
