Heavy artillery of the Soviet Red Army on the march in the Karelian Isthmus area of land
Heavy artillery of the Soviet Red Army on the march in the Karelian Isthmus area of land in Northwest Russia near the border with Finland.
The inscription on the gun reads " Forward: To Vyborg!"
The Battle of Vyborg was fought in the Finnish-Soviet Continuation War, a conflict fought by Finland and Nazi Germany, as co-belligerents, against the Soviet Union from 1941 to 1944.
Soviet advance forces captured Viborg on June 20, though the main offensive got stuck in the stubborn Finnish defense of the Tali-Ihantala region.
