The biggest ever Combined Operations daylight raid on the German-occupied port of Dieppe, northern France, during the Second World War.
Over 6, 050 infantry, made up predominately of Canadian troops, as well as British Special Service troops, a detachment of a US Rangers and a small contingent of Fighting French took part.
They were supported by a regiment of tanks and were put ashore from a naval force operating under protection of Royal Air Force (RAF) fighters.
