The white signal of surrender on the bomb battered landing ground on the island of Pantelleria during the SecondWorld War.
The island, lying between Sicily and Tunisia, was subjected to steadily increasing bombing attacks by the RAF, USAF and South African Air Force after previous offers of surrender were ignored. In early June, the attacks intensified and 14, 203 bombs amounting to 4, 119 tons were dropped on 16 Italian batteries.
Italian garrisons on other nearby islands (Lampedusa and Linosa) quickly fell afterwards, clearing the way for the invasion of Sicily a month later.
