In 1941 there was a convoy passing through the village and an anti aircraft gun was left behind for a few days with two soldiers.
The 3rd night a German bomber came over having lost his way from Glasgow, on seeing the Solway, they followed it and started dropping his bombs, killing several cows on a farm. A sister and a brother in a house were blown out of a window and the house was demolished. The brother was killed by the blast. The aircraft gunners could see the pilot in the plane but couldn t fie because it was stationed in the center of the village. It took 5 days for someone to take the gun away, there were lots of huts left and were frightened that they would destroy us, it only took 2 hours but it was a baptism of war.
(Picture). The foreground looks like haunt of rural peace. But in the background a blazing Gretna Village marks where the battle was waged.
