The British Royal Navy Aircraft Carrier HMS Ark Royal lists badly after being torpedoed by German U-boats 30 miles off the coast of Gibraltar during the Second World War.
On 10 November 1941, Ark Royal ferried aircraft to Malta before returning to Gibraltar. On the return journey mshe was struck by the German U-81 submarine and sank the following day.
