US Signalman directs landing ships off Okinawa Beach.
A US Navy Signalman, a flag in each hand waves a message to LSTs (landing ship, tanks) beached at Okinawa the day after the invasion of the island on March 31, 1945. He is standing on top of a Japanese pillbox which was blown asunder by US shells. By April 18, US troops held most of the Island from the northern tip down to the region of Naha, the principal city in the southern sector. Okinawa is 65 miles (10km) long and is the largest of the Ryukyu (Loochoo) group. It is only 375 miles (600 km) south of Japan. 1st April 1945
