A Triumph Herald crossing the Berlin Wall at Checkpoint Charlie
A Triumph Herald crossing the Berlin Wall at Checkpoint Charlie. Circa 1965
Following the erection of the wall in 1961, diplomats and foreigners were still allowed to cross the wall, and the UK along with the other Allied powers in Berlin regularly sent troops and diplomats into the Soviet sector through Checkpoint Charlie, one of the guarded crossing points between East and West.
Both sides were entitled to do this under the authority of the four Allied powers, made after the Yalta Conference
