The Battle of Monte Cassino, a series of four assaults by Allied Forces against the Axis held Winter Line during the attempted advance on to Rome, Italy in the Second World War.
Picture taken during the early stages of the attack of the Gustav Line shortly after the Rapido bridgeheads had been established. In the Cassino area 8th Army troops pressed on against determined enemy counter attacks and on the Cassino plain, British and Indian units fought their way through dense wire defences and minefields under a rain of fire directed from the mountainside. This fighting lead up to the capture of San Angelo.
