Allied troops proceed inland into Northern France on the mission to liberate France
Allied troops proceed inland into Northern France on the mission to liberate France and Europe following the Normandy landings of 6th June 1944.
Following a terrific barrage by massed field guns, British forces opened an attack in the neighbourhood of Tilly on 26th June and considerable breaches were made in the enemy lines. The action was very fierce with house to house fighting in the villages. Large numbers of tanks were employed by both sides.
This picture was taken during the first wave of the assault and it shows British troops in a sunken lane firing on enemy held positions on the outskirts of a village near Tilly, Normandy.
