The first parking meters are introduced in Grosvenor Square, Mayfair, London on 10th July 1958.
The scheme was an experiment to start with. Sixpence in the metre allowed parking for one hour. A shilling in the metre for two hours, after which the vehicle must be moved and not returned to anywhere in that parking vicinity for over an hour.
