Norman Cornish (right) gets ready for the royal presentation with Councillor Bob
Norman Cornish (right) gets ready for the royal presentation with Councillor Bob Pendlebury. Cornishs latest work of art will be subject to royal scrutiny next week. Earlier this year, the retired coal miner was commissioned by Durham County Council to paint a smaller version of his massive miners gala mural which hangs in the foyer at Durham County Hall. On Monday the council will present the painting as a gift from the people of Durham to the Duke and Duchess of York when they visit. Mr Cornish, 69 of Spennymoor, County Durham, began painting shortly after starting work down the pit as a 14 year old on Boxing Day 1933. April 1989
