Match That, trainees at Middlesbroughs Erimus Centre are set to send their latest
Match That, trainees at Middlesbroughs Erimus Centre are set to send their latest shipbuilding project sliding down the slipway. Its a canoe made entirely out of matchsticks and instructor supervisor John Arrowsmith reckons it will float like a dream. The canoe, which will be 6ft long when finished, is the second one built by trainees at the centre in Thorntree. Six trainees aged 16 to 65 are working on the current project and John estimates there are still a few months work to be done. The match firm Pioneer has donated 972, 000 matches specially imported from Sweden and a Tyne and Wear company is supplying free yacht varnish. Pictured are some of the trainees at work on the canoe, 26th August 1983
