Aerial view showing the damage to the Mohne Dam in the Ruhr Valley, Germany following an attack by Royal Air Force No. 617 Squadron (subsequently publicised as the " Dam Busters" ) on the Mohne and Eder Dams in the Ruhr Valley, Germany, using a specially developed " bouncing bomb" invented and developed by Barnes Wallis.
The raids were carried out on the night of 16th Ð17th May 1943 and caused causing catastrophic flooding of the Ruhr valley and of villages in the Eder valley.
In this picture the vast lake which used to be locked up behind the massive structure has almost vanished and the bottom of the reservoir is largely exposed.
