James McRory Smith, a former Black Watch soldier from Dumbarton aged 67

James McRory Smith, a former Black Watch soldier from Dumbarton aged 67, lives as a recluse in a dilapidated shepherds bothy at Strathchailleach, in the wilds of Sutherland, near Cape Wrath, in the Highlands of Scotland. Pictured October 1992. He makes a weekly 26 mile hike across peat bogs, hills and moors to pick up his pension from a post office at Balchrick and the on to the nearest shop at the fishing port of Kinlochbervie for messages before heading home
