Stand-in town crier Peter Beighton rang a slightly sour note with Chesters tourists

Stand-in town crier Peter Beighton rang a slightly sour note with Chesters tourists. Peter, 25, turned up for his noon broadcast at Chester Cross, complete with bell and scroll but his lack of historic regalia didn t suit the tradition seeking audience who greeted his appearance with a storm of boos and heckling. The official robes were with the real town crier, Tom Clarkson, 39, who was on his way to a crying competition in Hastings. 5th August 1978
