Hobarts Funnies were a number of unusually modified tanks operated by the 79th
Hobarts Funnies were a number of unusually modified tanks operated by the 79th Armoured Division and the Royal Engineers. These specialized tanks were developed under the guidance of Major General Percy Hobart to overcome the problems of the planned Invasion of Normandy. They played a major part on the Commonwealth beaches during the landings and are the forerunners of the modern combat engineering vehicles we see on todays battlefield. Our picture shows: A modified Churchill tank using a Fascine: A bundle of wooden poles or rough brushwood lashed together with wires carried in front of the tank that could be released to fill a ditch or form a step. Metal pipes in the centre of the fascine allowed water to flow through. Circa June 1944
