A new town takes final shape where RAF Bombers once flew to protect coastal shipping
A new town takes final shape where RAF Bombers once flew to protect coastal shipping from the manning Nazi U-boats. From the air, only an old hangar stands in the top left hand corner of our picture as a reminder of the vital wartime station at Thornaby. Trenchard Avenue, the main road running across the picture is named after Lord Trenchard, the father of the RAF. And Mitchell Avenue, which goes from the roundabout past the flats to Middlesbrough is named after General Mitchell of the American Air Force. 24th July 1975
