Fountain Pen Atom Meter. 2nd November 1949
Pocket meters to register the presence of radioactive material are to be turned out by the hundred thousand at scientific instrument factories in Leeds, Yorkshire and Micham Surrey. They look like fountain pens and work from a flash lamp battery.
The Government is considering whether there should be a general issue, on the lines of the gas mask issue in the event of war.
The Atomic pen is so simple a child can use it, by holding it to the eye like a telescope. Powerful magnifying lenses are trained on to a quartz fibre needle, which swings over when radioactivity is present. The extent of the radioactivity can be read on a graded scale.
First deliveries will be to the Civil Defence Department of the Home Office. They will be issued to air raid wardens, and later to hospitals and industrial firms working with radioactive isotopes
