Born 12th may 1924. Hancocks first break came was a six week spell at the infamous " Windmill theatre" where comedians entertained between the nude reviews. His stage work came to the attention of the BBC and he got a spot on Variety Bandbox on 9th Jan 1949. Career began to improve until in 1951, he was selected to take over from Robert Moreton as Archie Andrews tutor in the popular radio show " Educating Archie". This role brought him to national prominence and his phrase " Flippin kids" was born. The BBC then gave Hancock a slot on " The Forces All Star Bill.". When the scriptwriters had to be replaced Hancock gave his approval to Ray Galton and Alan Simpson taking over - there then began ten years of improving success for the three of them. Hancock then got " Star Bill" which was so successful that the BBC gave him his own show, " Hancocks Half Hour." (November 2nd, 1954) Among others on the show were Sid James, Kenneth Williams and Hattie Jacques. His first TV show was on ITV but was not hugely successful (script by Eric Sykes). Returned to BBC and the show ran simultaneously in TV and radio for 5 years until the ultimate accolade was acheived - shopkeepers and publicans began to complain that when the shows were on their pubs and shops were empty and the streets were deserted.
However later, when Hancocks career began to wane he turned to drink, becoming a chronic alcoholic. In the sixties alcoholism wasn t well understood and the bookings for Hancock began to dry up. However, he did have some success in Australia. His second marriage fell apart and whilst in Ausstralia " alone, depressed and despising the ignominy of sinking into public oblivion, he commited suicide on June 25th, 1968.
