At the beginning of the First World War the Belgian Army fielded 102 machine guns. Many of these guns were pulled on small gun carriages by specially trained Belgian Mastiff dog teams, which were more than capable of drawing the 60lbs weight of a Maxim machine gun. The dog teams were able to pull the machine gun carriages and ammunition, weighing in total up to 200lbs, for long distances at a 4 to 5 mile per hour pace
