The annual ceremony of planting the Penny Hedge which dates back 800 years seen here being carried out in Whitby, Scarborough, North Yorkshire. For centuries, the people of Whitby have witnessed the ancient tradition of the Penny Hedge where crowds gather to watch the construction of a hedge made from hazel sticks on the banks of Whitby harbour. Legend has it that if the hedge is unable to withstand three tides then bad luck will be cast upon the town. 30th May 1935
