Children grow their own vitamin food on London blitzed site
Children grow their own vitamin food on London blitzed site. Forty Clerkenwell school children have their own garden plots under cultivation, after debris had been cleared from a site in great Sutton Street near Smithfield meat market. They grow onions, turnips, cabbage, parsnips, beet, mint and parsley and take home the produce. Rex, a spaniel, is the guardian of the tools, which are given out by Mrs. Lang, who attends daily. The site was taken over by the met. Public gardens Association and this is the first of a number in other parts of London. H. Smith, a gardener, attends to help the children. July 1947
