The Short S.45 Solent 2 the last of the large flying boats flown by BOAC on overseas routes. It first flew in 1946 and the last one was built in 1949. A total of 21 of various marks were produced and it carried 34 passengers and 7 crew. This photograph was taken on 5th May 1949 on the Thames near the Tower of London for the aircraft to be named City of London by the Lord Mayor, Sir George Aylwen, in celebration of 30 years of British civil air transport.
