With a big money prize for the first man-powered flight still unclaimed at the time
With a big money prize for the first man-powered flight still unclaimed at the time, Mr Charles Henry Lutman invented and built this attempt at an aircraft in his backyard.
The picture on the shows the rusting left-over of Lutmanis flying machine.
The so-called plane was built many years before the First World War in Westmacott Street, in Newburn.
His idea was to sit in the saddle provided and pedal furiously in a valiant attempt to turn the bamboo and canvas propellers while bicycle wheels gave the necessary mobility.
It was tried many times on local fields but, alas, it never took to the air and eventually fell into rusting neglect.
