Nine year strike. James Downey owner of Downeys public house, Dun Laoghaire
Nine year strike. James Downey owner of Downeys public house, Dun Laoghaire, County Dublin employs non union assistance following a disagreement over employment of a bar maid with the national Union of Vinters, Grocers and Allied Trades Assistants, that was nine years ago. He pays more than union rates but for nine years a picket has paced up and down outside his pub. The pickets it is estimated covered over 28000 miles and its the longest strike in the world.
The publican has a sense of humour for he rings up the Union if the pickets are late on duty and when the snows about he has it swept away to make it more comfortable for the pickets. Our Picture Shows; Landlord James Downeyserving a pint to one of his regulars. 16th February 1948
