Postmen and women in Leamington have been chosen to test a new superbike aimed at speeding up deliveries. Posties traditional bikes are destined to follow red telephone boxes into extinction as a six-month trial of new mountain-style machines gets under way. Leamington is one of just five towns in Britain taking part in the Royal Mail bike test. The others are Swindon, Reading, Ipswich and Guilford. The first new version of the postmans bike in more than 50 years is lighter, sturdier and safer. It also has a plastic basket to hold the delivery sack. If the trials are successful, the bike will gradually replace the Royal Mails 35, 000 traditional bicycles.
Our photograph shows Leamington postman Hugh O Brien on one of the new delivery bikes.
