The acsension of Elizabeth came on her fathers (George VI) sad death on February 6th 1953. She was in Kenya at the time so the proclamation was not official until the 8th. The three queens were rarely pictured together. Unfortunately Queen Mary died on the 24th March, 1953. George VI was the third son she had seen die. George VI never found being king easy but his popularity was never in doubt. It was evidenced by the crowds of people who turned out to pay their respects at his funeral. Over 305, 000 people visited the Great Hall at Westminster where the Kings body lay in state.
