Beckett v Carpentier boxing
Joe Beckett, the newly crowned British heavyweight champion, met one of boxings all time greats, Frenchman Georges Carpentier, in December 1919 for the European heavyweight championship. Becketts British predecessor, Bombadier Billy Wells, had fought Carpentier for the same title six years earlier but had lost in four rounds, making Carpentier the European welterweight, middleweight, light-heavyweight and then heavyweight champion all at the same time. Despite beating Wells earlier that year, Beckett was never as good a boxer and Carpentier knew this. He showed little respect for the British champion, nor his brutish style, and KO d him in an incredible 70 seconds. The European crown stayed in France, with the rightful owner.
