The 40m-long Spirit of Eindhoven, sponsored by the electronics giant Philips, arrived at Peterlee Airfield to take staff from the Philips Components factory in Durham for a spin as a reward for winning a customer service competition.
The helium-filled airship, which had a top speed of 50mph, illuminated from inside, was set to provide a spectacular sight flying over County Durham at night.
