Framed Print of Workman were ripping up hundreds of expensive marble floor tiles after a British Rail bid
Workman were ripping up hundreds of expensive marble floor tiles after a British Rail bid to brighten up Newcastle Central Station turned into a nightmare in summer 1987.
Every tile was being removed from the main concourse just 10 months after being laid in an operation believed to have cost more than 100, 000.
BR chiefs were understood to be involved in a legal wrangle with contractors over who should foot the bill for the disaster.
Problems started almost as soon as the antique Celtic floor tiles were laid.
Cracks started appearing in several areas and the situation became so bad that many of the high-gloss tiles had to be cemented over.
There were several complaints from people concerned about the dangers caused by the broken tiles, which also could become slippery when wet.
