A piece of Alnwicks history went under the auctioneers hammer in September 1971.
In this picture from our archives, auctioneers clerk Mark Marshall examines the stone statue of a soldier believed to have stood guard at Alnwick Castle for 1, 000 years.
The 5ft statue of a soldier wearing a plumed helmet and carrying a shield used to stand on the castle ramparts, until it was removed during alterations and taken to the front garden of Ravensmount, a house in Alnwick whose contents were being auctioned.
Mark said: Its not very often you get something like this to auction. Its the sort of thing that would go nicely in a country garden, but not my flat in Jesmond.
