There was one fan author and actor Norman Painting was particularly pleased to meet when

There was one fan author and actor Norman Painting was particularly pleased to meet when he held a book-signing session in Leamington. For when 88-year-old Mrs Louisa Jones popped into John Goulds bookshop in Regent Street for a signed copy of Mr Paintings new book, it turned out she was a distant relative. And after chatting with her about the family and its farming connections. Mr Painting (Phil Archer of radios " The Archers" ), concluded: " There is much more farming in my background than I knew." Mrs Jones - whose maiden name was Painting, lives at Percy Terrace. The visit was a surprise birthday treat planned for her by her grand-daughter, Mrs Elizabeth Anker. " She has always said that Norman Painting was a distant relatived, but they have never met, " explained Mrs Anker. Mrs Jones confessed that the visit was a complete surprise. " I didn t know anything about it." she said. " I don t go into the town as I can t walk far but its very nice to have met him." The signing session for Mr Paintings book " Forever Ambridge" about the making of " The Archers" during the last 25 years, took place only a few yards from where he was born in Grove Street. He stayed in Leamington until he was 14, and then moved to The Old Rectory in Warmington. He has acted in " The Archers" since it began and has written scripts for the series for the past 10 years, as well as maintaining a seperate career as a writer. Mr Painting said he never intended to get involved in a daily serial. He wanted to wite poetry and plays but he has never become bored and still looks forward to recording. He described the book as an " affectionate retrospective" of the programme and its people. He thinks one of the strengths of the series has been that it is about what could and does happen in an English village.
