Wartime favourite Dame Vera Lynn brought the blitz commemoration to life this morning
Wartime favourite Dame Vera Lynn brought the blitz commemoration to life this morning - by flicking on a period radio set and listening to the announcement that heralded the Second World War. Exactly 50 yerars on from the great air raid of November 1940, Dame Vera arrived to help the people of Coventry mark the anniversary and the re-emergence of the city. She opened a Blitz Experience exhibition at Coventrys Museum of British Road Transport, which recreates the citys darkest night in sight and sound. Afterwards she described the exhibition as " realistic and quite frightening in a way." She said: " It will make a lot of people aware of what happened. It isn t glorifying it at all." Later on she was due to switch on the Christmas lights. She will also lead the community singing in Broadgate tonight. She arrived at the museum in a car used by Field Marshall Viscount Montgomery, with a crowd singing We ll Meet Again to welcome her.
