The Duchess of Gloucester toured bombed areas of Coventry after the Nazi air raids
The Duchess of Gloucester toured bombed areas of Coventry after the Nazi air raids. She stoped to talk to Mr and Mrs Oldfield, who lost seven relatives when a bomb hit their house, killing 12 people in all. Mr Oldfield told the Duchess how he had been trapped by by heavy timbers for an hour and a half in the demolished house before being extracated by the rescue squad. The Duchess shook hands with them both and after expressing her deep sympathy in their loss, congratulated them on their escape. Mrs Oldfield was in an Anderson shelter in the garden when the bomb exploded and did not know for some time that her husband had been trapped and several of his relatives killed. She is pictured with the Mayor of Coventry, Alderman J. A. Moseley
