A mechanical charging machine feeding a 30 ton electric arc furnace at the English Steel Corporation Works (Vickers) in Sheffield, which specialises in the electrical induction method.
The raw material used to charge the furnace - scrap metal, alloy etc, is weighed out into special steel pans. A charger arm (or " peel" ) then picks up one of the pans, conveys it to the furnace and by rotating it, deposits the charge wherever required.
