J Thompson the oldest knocker up in Blackburn. The job of a knocker-ups was to rouse sleeping people so they could get to work on time. They used a long and light stick (often bamboo) to tap on the bedroom windows. The knocker-up would not leave a clients window until they were assured the client had been awoken. In return the knocker-up would be paid a few pence a week by each of his clients for this service. 30th December 1911
