Sunderland-born Ernie Taylor played for four League clubs: Newcastle United, Blackpool, Manchester United and his hometown club Sunderland. He played for three clubs in three FA Cup Finals, winning with Newcastle in 1951 and as inside-forward partner to Stanley Matthews for Blackpool in 1953. In 1958 he was given special dispensation to join Manchester United after the Munich disaster, and got a runners-up medal in the Final against Bolton. The ex-submariner had played in an early round for Blackpool. A little Napoleon of an inside-forward, he was a gifted pass master, but was unfortunate to win his one and only England cap in the 6-3 thrashing by the Puskas-propelled Magical Magyars of Hungary at Wembley in 1953.
