Tommy Walker - Chelsea Football Player Circa 1946.
With the football calendar was abandoned at the outbreak of the Second World War, Chelsea were reduced to playing regional competitions such as the games against Charlton and Millwall in the Football League War Cup. With most of the squad overseas fighting the war, guest players donned the blue shirt. One player to guest for Chelsea in 1944 and 1945 was Hearts star Tommy Walker, a well-respected and much loved Scottish international who was called - Footballs First Gentleman. His career in football was in the balance when he nearly became a minister for the Church of Scotland. He joined the army in 1938 as a sergeant in the Signals Regiment, went to India, but still managed to play the game, including turning out for the Armys - All Stars - Team. Chelsea were so impressed by his wartime appearances they paid Hearts £ 6, 000 for his services to play alongside Tommy Lawton. He returned to Hearts in 1948 as assistant manager
