Two young children fell into the river and an Italian prisoner was among a small group of men who dived in to rescue them. The children were saved but unfortunately the prisoner got himself into difficulties. Although some of hs comrades tried to save him he drowned. His bravery was recognised in tributes sent to his home in Italy. He later received a posthumous Royal Humane Society Award. After the war the German prisoners were kept on for labour work. However, after a while attempts were made to integrate them into the local society. Indeed - In May 1946, soon after their move to Burrs Mill, around 150 German prisoners attended services at All Saints Churchon two occasions and then it was repeated at Walmersly Church. One of their number acted as an interpreter to guide them through the service
