General de Gaulle reviews French troops in London, 1940
Soldier and statesman (1890-1970), de Gaulle was arguably Frances greatest statesman. He took control of the Free French forces after the collapse of France in 1940, urging the French by radio from London to continue the struggle against Hitler. He returned to a liberated Paris in August 1944 as the leader of the provisional government, was recalled to office in 1958 after French colonialists seized power in Algeria and devised a new constitution. He conceded Algerian independence and subsequently won two presidential elections (1958 and 1965). Strongly nationalistic and resentful of the special relationship between the US and the UK, he is remembered in the UK for his famous " Non" to Britains first application to join the Common Market
