Sir Winston Churchill, who was Prime Minister at the time, had to make the sad announcement to the country, that King George VI had passed away at Sandringham, on the 6th of February, 1952. Christened Albert Arthur Frederick George. Known to the royal family as Bertie. Was Prince Albert, Duke of York (1920-1936). Acceded as George VI following his brothers abdication on 11 Dec.1936. It has been widely suggested that George was not ready for the crown when it came to him and that the unexpected pressure it placed on him led to his ill health and premature death. His reign was marked by the relinquishment of the title of Emperor of India, following the partition of India in 1947 into India and Pakistan. George VI had cancer of the lung, (one lung had to be removed). He died of cancer following a long illness. Bertie had a speech defect which made him stutter and stammer.
