Prime Minister Edward Heath conducting Broadstairs annual carol concert in 1971. Heath, the Torys plain-man successor to Alec Douglas Home, had lost the 1966 General Election to Harold Wilson, but had his revenge when he snatched a surprise victory in 1970. After constant conflict with the trades unions, he called a " Who runs Britain" election in 1974... resulting in a hung Parliament. Failing to achieve a coalition with the Liberals, Wilson took over, called a second poll for October and won an overall majority of three seats. Heath was toppled by Margaret Thatcher in 1975
