Labour leader Neil Kinnock and wife Glenys at their London home in 1987. Kinnock succeeded Michael Foot in 1983 after the trouncing by Margaret Thatcher but himself lost to a landslide in 1987 and set about a massive modernising of the Party. Having done the job and looking a certainty to beat Thatchers successor John Major, Kinnock " snatched defeat from the jaws of victory" in 1992. He resigned almost immediately and was replaced by John Smith. 15th May 1987
