Jack Dempsey (1895 - 1983)
US boxer, known as the Manassa Mauler'. Won the World Heavyweight Title in 1919, beating Jess Willard in three rounds at Toledo, Ohio on the 4th July. He successfully defended his title against Billy Miske, Bill Brennan, Georges Carpentier (perhaps his greatest and most difficult fight against the exceptional frenchman), Tom Gibbons and Luis Firpo. 23/9/26 - Dempsey finally lost his crown to Gene Tunney on points. In a rematch Gene Tunney beat him again.
Dempsey is one of the all-time great heavyweights. He was also the first man o get a One Million dollar gate at the ox office. He retired in 1932 but had three fihs in 1940. He went on to run the Jack Dempsey restaurant in New York and became a boxing and wrestling referee. His fight against Georges Carpentier on Friday, 1st July, 1921 is legendary. Over 100, 000 turned up to watch in Jersey City as Dempsey managed to beat the graceful frenchman in the fourth round. The spectacle of two of the greatest Heavyweights of the period, if not all time, meeting in the ring aroused worldwide hysteria. © Mirrorpix
